Smart Aquarium app

The Smart Aquarium takes the routine out of aquarium care. Sensors track the tank, and a mobile app shows how the fish and plants are doing and lets people adjust every setting to their liking. The system automates the rest.

My focus: the UX research from ground zero, and the MVP’s design.

  • Year

    2018/2023

  • Timeline

    3 months

  • Tools

    Figma,Miro,Adobe XD

  • My role

    UX/UI Designer,UX Researcher

  • Team

    Product Designer (1)

  • Home screen: a live camera view of the aquarium with a status message
  • Julia’s Aquarium in good condition: a condition chart over the month and every ecosystem parameter marked Good
  • My fishes: the three fish in the aquarium, with a slot to add a new one
  • Goldfish profile: what it looks like, its habitat and its diseases

Problem statement

Challenges

The product depended on the hardware and technology already on the market.

Business
problems

  • Caring for an aquarium takes time and expertise
  • Preventing disease and loss among fish and plants takes in-depth knowledge
  • Monitoring and controlling the key metrics by hand is hard

Design
goals

01

Make aquarium care simple and adaptable, with as little intervention as possible

02

Show the essential data in one view and make every metric easy to control

03

Scale beyond home aquariums to large water systems

Process & solution

Process

  1. Discovery

    • Ran the kick-off
    • Planned the UX strategy
    • Analysed competitors
    • Researched the market
    • Ran moderated in-person interviews
  2. Define

    • Created personas
    • Mapped customer journeys
  3. Ideate

    • Analysed the data
    • Set design principles and non-functional requirements
    • Listed the functional requirements and MVP features
    • Prioritized the features
    • Created user flows and the sitemap
  4. Design

    • Sketched lo-fi wireframes
    • Built, tested and iterated prototypes
    • Created the final designs

Key artefacts

Competitor analysis table: six smart-aquarium products against the technologies each one covers
01 · DiscoveryCompetitor analysisFive smart aquariums and stand-alone sensors, mapped feature by feature.
Hypotheses testing: five assumptions about aquarium care, each tagged partly confirmed or approved, with interview evidence
01 · DiscoveryHypotheses testingFive assumptions, checked in interviews. Two held, three only partly.
Persona Sandra, a novice aquarium owner: story, goals, pain points and what she does today
02 · DefinePersonaSandra loves fish, keeps losing them and doesn’t know why.
Customer journey map: stages from desire to maintenance, with the process, problems, experience curve and ideas at each
02 · DefineCustomer journey mapSeven stages, from wanting an aquarium to keeping it alive.
Design principles slide: rapidity, clarity and precision, beauty, a smart know-it-all, and a technological bomb
03 · IdeateDesign principlesFive rules for the app: rapid, precise, beautiful, smart, high-tech.
Sitemap: registration, virtual aquarium, dashboard, catalogue, camera view, forum and settings
03 · IdeateSitemapThe app’s structure, from sign-up to the forum.
Card sorting results: aquarium parameters ranked by importance, with pollution level on top and food second
03 · IdeateCard sortingUsers ranked pollution level first, food second.
Hand-drawn paper prototype: sign-up, adding fish to a virtual aquarium, calculating the ecosystem and the dashboard
04 · DesignPaper prototypeThe first run on paper: sign up, build the aquarium, reach a stable ecosystem.
